Laos’ Playground for Hikes, Lagoons, and Sky-High Views
If you’re looking for one of the best outdoor destinations in Laos, then Vang Vieng is a must visit.
Known for its limestone karst mountains, turquoise lagoons, and adventurous activities, this small town has been a staple for the thrill seeker's Laos itinerary.

Located between Luang Prabang and Vientiane, Vang Vieng is easy to reach by train, making it an ideal addition to any Laos itinerary.
Whether you’re hiking to panoramic viewpoints, lagoon hopping, or flying above the landscape, Vang Vieng offers a mix of adventure and scenery that’s hard to match.
We recommend spending 2–3 days in Vang Vieng to fully experience the area without rushing.
Best Things to Do in Vang Vieng
1. Hike the Best Viewpoints in Vang Vieng
Hiking is one of the top things to do in Vang Vieng. The region is surrounded by steep limestone mountains, and has many short but intense trails that lead to incredible panoramic viewpoints.
Nam Xay Viewpoint: Nam Xay Viewpoint is one of the most famous viewpoints in Vang Vieng — offering sweeping views over rice fields and jagged karst peaks. The hike is short (20–30 minutes) but steep, especially near the top where you’ll climb over rocks.
At the summit, you’ll find the iconic motorbike photo spot perched on the edge.
Phapoungkham Cave & Viewpoint: This hike combines multiple experiences in one.
It has:
Cave exploration
Jungle hiking
Two viewpoints
Cultural shrine stop
It’s less crowded than Nam Xay but still offers excellent views. Expect some steep sections and wooden ladders near the top.
General Tips:
Go early in the morning (fewer crowds + cooler temps)
Wear proper shoes — not suitable for sandals
Bring water
Small entrance fee applies (approximately $1.50 USD per person)
Parking is available at the hike entrances
Other popular hikes include Pha Ngern (Silver Cliff), which offers a quieter alternative with equally impressive views.
2. Visit the Blue Lagoons in Vang Vieng

No Vang Vieng itinerary is complete without visiting the famous blue lagoons. These natural pools are surrounded by jungle and limestone cliffs, making them perfect for swimming and relaxing.
There are three main lagoons located 20–40 minutes from town.
All lagoons offer:
Restaurants and drinks
Restrooms
Seating areas
Activities like swings, ziplines, and jumping platforms
Note: there are entry fees for each lagoon (approximately $1.50 USD per person)
Lagoon 3 (Best for Relaxation): Lagoon 3 is quieter and less developed, making it ideal if you’re looking to relax. We spent hours here swimming, ziplining, and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. Cabana seating is available but fills up quickly.
Lagoon 2 (Best for Variety): Lagoon 2 is larger and more developed, with multiple swimming areas and more food options. It’s a good balance between activity and relaxation.
Lagoon 1: Lagoon 1 is the most crowded, so many travelers choose Lagoons 2 and 3 for a better overall experience.

3. Experience Vang Vieng from the Sky
One of the most unique things to do in Vang Vieng is seeing the landscape from above.
At sunrise and sunset, the sky fills with balloons and paramotorists — creating one of the most iconic scenes in Laos.
Hot Air Balloon Vang Vieng
A hot air balloon ride in Vang Vieng is one of the most popular experiences.
Duration: 30–60 minutes
Cost: ~$70–$150 USD
Best time: Sunrise or sunset
Expect panoramic views of mountains, rivers, and rice fields.
Paramotoring Vang Vieng
For something that's quite adventurous, try paramotoring. This tandem experience combines a motor and paraglider, giving you a more dynamic and closer view of the landscape.
Duration: 15–30 minutes
Cost: ~$50 USD
It’s faster, lower, and more immersive than a balloon ride.

4. Rent a Buggy or Motorbike
One of the best ways to explore Vang Vieng is by renting your own vehicle. This gives you the flexibility to visit viewpoints, lagoons, and hidden spots at your own pace.

We chose a buggy rental, which was comfortable, easy to drive, and ideal for rougher roads.
Cost: ~$80 USD/day (full day)
Includes: Transport to rental location
Note: Buggies are not allowed in the main town
Other options:
Motorbike (best for experienced riders)
Bicycle (for short distances)
Tuk-tuk or private driver
