Laos is one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated travel destinations. Located in the heart of the region and completely landlocked, Laos is bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar.

Defined by rugged mountains, river valleys, and the winding Mekong River, Laos offers a slower pace of travel, deep cultural traditions, and a strong connection to nature.

This guide highlights some of the best places to visit in Laos—traveling from the historic city of Luang Prabang in the north, through the adventure hub of Vang Vieng, and ending in the laid-back capital of Vientiane. It’s designed to help plan a well-rounded and memorable Laos itinerary.

Arriving in Laos & Travel Planning Tips

Most travelers begin their journey in Luang Prabang, which is one of the most accessible entry points in northern Laos. One can easily fly into the city, especially if you are coming from nearby countries, such as Thailand or Vietnam.

If you are planning to add Laos after visiting Thailand, which many seem to do, there are also options to take a "slow boat." It is an affordable, two-day journey from the border of Thailand along the Mekong River.

Tourist visas are required for most visitors and can be obtained either online in advance or on arrival at major entry points.

Traveling between cities in Laos has become significantly easier with the introduction of the high-speed rail system, connecting Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and Vientiane in just a few hours.

An important note regarding internal trains: We experienced a smooth process booking in advance through Laos Train . Please be aware of the security check at the train station, as it is more similar to an airport security check than one may be used to when boarding a train. Be sure to arrive with ample time to check-in and review items that are and are not allowed through the security check.

General Travel Tips:

  • Carry cash (Lao Kip) as many places are cash-based

  • Agree on tuk-tuk prices before riding

  • Dress modestly at temples

  • Respect local traditions, especially during religious ceremonies

Luang Prabang Region: Culture, Temples & River Life

Luang Prabang is widely considered the cultural heart of Laos. With its blend of French colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, and riverside setting, it offers a timeless and peaceful atmosphere.

Night Market & Street Food

The Luang Prabang Night Market is a daily evening highlight. Visitors can explore dozens of food stalls offering Lao, Thai, and Chinese dishes, along with handmade crafts and souvenirs.

Wat Xieng Thong

One of the most important temples in Laos, Wat Xieng Thong dates back to the 16th century and showcases classic Lao architecture with sweeping roofs, gold detailing, and intricate mosaics.

Tak Bat (Alms Giving Ceremony)

Each morning at sunrise, monks walk through the streets collecting offerings in a sacred ritual known as Tak Bat. This centuries-old tradition reflects the spiritual foundation of Lao culture and should be observed respectfully.

Mount Phousi

Rising about 100 meters above the city, Mount Phousi offers panoramic views after a climb of roughly 300 steps. It’s one of the best spots for sunrise or sunset.

Mekong River Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise along the Mekong River is one of the most relaxing experiences in Luang Prabang, with many options including drinks or dinner onboard.

Getting Around

Tuk-tuks are widely available, affordable, and one of the easiest ways to explore the city.

Vang Vieng Region: Adventure, Views & Blue Lagoons

Vang Vieng is surrounded by limestone mountains, lush valleys, and the scenic Nam Song River. Once known for its backpacker party scene, it has evolved into one of Laos’ top adventure destinations.

Viewpoints & Hiking

Popular viewpoints like Nam Xay Viewpoint and Pha Ngern Viewpoint offer steep but rewarding hikes with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Blue Lagoons

Vang Vieng’s Blue Lagoons are famous for their vibrant turquoise waters. These natural swimming spots are perfect for cooling off, relaxing, and enjoying the countryside.

Paramotoring

One of the most unique experiences in Vang Vieng is paramotoring—flying above the mountains and rivers for a breathtaking aerial perspective of the region.

Countryside & Resort Stay

For a quieter escape, the Nam Ngum Reservoir area offers peaceful accommodations and scenic views, ideal for slowing down after a few days of adventure.

Dining in Vang Vieng

Local restaurants and fusion spots offer a mix of traditional Lao dishes and international cuisine, making it easy to find something for every taste.

Vientiane Region: Capital City & Cultural Landmarks

Vientiane is one of Southeast Asia’s most relaxed capital cities. With its riverside setting, French colonial influence, and Buddhist heritage, it’s perfect for a slower, more reflective travel experience.

Night Market & Riverside

The Vientiane Night Market offers a casual way to explore local food, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy the Mekong River atmosphere in the evening.

Pha That Luang

The most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang is a 16th-century golden stupa that symbolizes Lao identity, Buddhism, and independence. The surrounding temple complex includes Wat That Luang Neua, Tai, and Kang.

Patuxai

Often compared to the Arc de Triomphe, Patuxai honors those who fought for Laos’ independence. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views and explore exhibits detailing the country’s history.

Final Thoughts: Why Visit Laos

From the cultural depth of Luang Prabang to the adventurous landscapes of Vang Vieng and the calm charm of Vientiane, Laos offers a unique travel experience that feels both authentic and unhurried.

Its combination of natural beauty, rich traditions, and fewer crowds makes it an ideal destination for travelers looking to explore Southeast Asia beyond the usual hotspots.

If you’re planning a trip through the region, Laos is more than worth the stop—it may just be the destination that surprises you the most.
