Why Visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka may be a relatively small island, but it packs an incredible amount of diversity into one destination.

In just over ten days, we explored ancient kingdoms hidden deep within the jungle, climbed one of the world's most famous rock fortresses at sunrise, searched for leopards and elephants on safari, and finished our adventure relaxing beside the Indian Ocean.
Whether you're interested in history, wildlife, food, or adventure, Sri Lanka offers something for every type of traveler.
If you're planning your first visit, this itinerary combines many of the country's biggest highlights while still allowing enough time to truly enjoy each destination.
Before You Go
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time depends on which region you're visiting.
South & West Coast: December–April
East Coast: May–September
Cultural Triangle: January–April generally offers the driest conditions.
We went in April, and even during the dry season, expect hot and humid weather. We recommend planning outdoor activities early in the morning whenever possible.
Getting Around
Instead of renting a car, we hired Dapru Tours to transport us from destinination to destination.
There are many options for drivers, whether for just a portion of your trip, or to travel alonside you the entire time. Either way, having a private driver made the trip incredibly easy, eliminated the stress of driving unfamiliar roads, and was surprisingly affordable.
If you're visiting multiple destinations, we'd highly recommend this option.
Day 1-2 – Arrive in Colombo
Most international flights arrive in Colombo, making it the perfect place to begin your Sri Lanka adventure. We used our first two days to recover from our flight, exchange money, enjoy incredible food, and relax before beginning our road trip through the Cultural Triangle.
If your flight arrives early, consider visiting Galle Face Green, exploring Pettah Market, or simply enjoying your resort's amenities before heading inland.
Where We Stayed

We couldn't have asked for a better place to begin our trip. Marino Beach Resort combines modern luxury with one of the best rooftop infinity pools in Colombo, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The spacious rooms, outstanding service, and incredible breakfast buffet immediately set the tone for the rest of our adventure.
One of the biggest highlights was the food. Between the breakfast buffet and multiple on-site restaurants, every meal was exceptional, making it a destination in itself after a long international flight.
Days 3-6 – Dambulla, Polonnaruwa & Sigiriya
After leaving Colombo, we drove into Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and based ourselves in Dambulla for the next three nights. Staying here allowed us to comfortably explore several of the country's most famous historical sites without constantly changing hotels.
Explore Ancient Polonnaruwa
Located about 90 minutes from Dambulla, Polonnaruwa quickly became one of the biggest surprises of our trip, and it makes for a great day trip.

Once the second capital of ancient Sri Lanka, this UNESCO World Heritage Site flourished during the 11th and 12th centuries under King Parakramabahu the Great. Today, it's one of the country's best-preserved archaeological parks, filled with ancient temples, royal palaces, massive reservoirs, towering Buddha statues, and beautifully carved stone monuments.
Before beginning our tour, we visited the museum where we learned about the city's fascinating history and excavation process. One of the highlights was discovering that our guide had actually helped excavate many of the artifacts displayed inside.

Be sure to see:
Royal Palace Ruins
Sacred Quadrangle
Vatadage
Rankoth Vehera
Lankathilaka Image House
Gal Vihara
Of all the sites, Gal Vihara completely stole the show. The four enormous Buddha statues carved directly into a granite rock face are breathtaking and among the most impressive ancient monuments we saw anywhere in Sri Lanka.

Monkeys wandered between temples, deer grazed beside thousand-year-old ruins, and towering trees slowly reclaimed the stone structures, creating one of the most peaceful archaeological sites we've ever visited.
Sunrise at Pidurangala Rock
Rather than climbing Sigiriya first, we followed the recommendation of several locals and
our morning before sunrise at nearby Pidurangala Rock.
The 30 to 45-minute hike rewards visitors with arguably the best viewpoint in all of Sri Lanka. Watching the sun rise over the jungle while Sigiriya Rock emerged through the morning mist was one of the highlights of our trip—and an absolute dream for photographers.
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress
After sunrise, we made the short drive to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. For those with moderate levels of fitness, combining Pidurangala Rock and Sigiriya Rock Fortress into one day is reasonable and makes for a memorable morning.
Towering nearly 660 feet (200 meters) above the surrounding jungle, Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka's most recognizable landmarks. Built during the 5th century by King Kashyapa, the fortress features royal gardens, advanced water systems, colorful frescoes, the famous Lion's Paws, and spectacular summit ruins overlooking endless jungle.

Although the entrance fee is relatively expensive compared to other attractions in Sri Lanka, we thought it was absolutely worth it.
With an extra afternoon, we simply relaxed around Dambulla before making the long drive south to Yala the following morning.
Where We Stayed
Sundaras Jungle Resort quickly became one of the most memorable places we stayed during our trip. Nestled among lush tropical greenery, the peaceful property offered a quiet escape after long days of exploring Sri Lanka's ancient cities.
One of our favorite memories was watching troops of monkeys regularly visit the resort while we enjoyed breakfast each morning. The comfortable rooms, friendly staff, delicious breakfasts, and tranquil jungle setting made it the perfect base for exploring the Cultural Triangle.
Important Travel Tip
Watch for wild elephants on roads around Sigiriya during dawn and dusk (do NOT walk between destinations early in the morning)
Days 6–8 – Yala National Park Safari
From Dambulla, we drove about four and a half hours south to Yala National Park for the wildlife portion of our trip.
Originally, we planned to spend just one day in Yala before continuing to Udawalawe National Park. However, after exploring the quieter Blocks 5 and 6 during our first safari, we were so impressed that we changed our itinerary and stayed an extra day to experience the famous Block 1.
It ended up being one of the best decisions we made.
Across multiple safaris, we spotted:
Leopards
Wild elephants
Crocodiles
Water buffalo
Peacocks
Eagles
Monkeys
Countless colorful bird species
Exploring different sections of the park gave us a much more complete safari experience. While Block 1 is famous for its leopard population, Blocks 5 and 6 offered fewer vehicles, beautiful scenery, and abundant wildlife in a much quieter setting.
Where We Stayed
Located is the nearby town of Tissamaharama, Kithala Resort was the perfect safari base. Surrounded by rice fields and palm trees, the resort offered spacious rooms, beautiful grounds, and a relaxing atmosphere between early morning and afternoon game drives.

After spending hours searching for wildlife, returning to the resort to unwind by the pool and enjoy dinner made the experience even more enjoyable.
Travel Tips
Spend at least two safari days if your schedule allows.
Explore multiple park blocks instead of only Block 1.
Morning safaris usually offer the best wildlife activity.
Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens if possible.
Wear neutral-colored clothing during your safari.
Days 9–10: Relax in Colombo
After nearly ten days of ancient cities, early mornings, and unforgettable wildlife encounters, we returned to Colombo for two final nights before flying home.
Rather than packing our schedule with sightseeing, we slowed down and enjoyed everything we had missed at the beginning of the trip. We spent our days relaxing by the rooftop infinity pool, watching sunsets over the Indian Ocean, trying more incredible Sri Lankan cuisine, and reflecting on everything we had experienced over the past week.
It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure.

Where We Stayed
Returning to Marino Beach Resort felt like the perfect reward after several days of travel. The luxurious rooms, incredible restaurants, oceanfront location, and stunning rooftop infinity pool made it one of our favorite hotels of the entire trip.
If you're looking to splurge on one hotel during your Sri Lanka itinerary, this would easily be our top recommendation.
Tips for Visiting Sri Lanka
Hire a Driver
Transportation throughout Sri Lanka is surprisingly affordable, and hiring a private driver was one of the best decisions we made during our trip. Not only did it eliminate the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads, but it also saved time between destinations and gave us the flexibility to stop at viewpoints, local restaurants, and hidden gems along the way.
If you're planning to visit multiple destinations like Dambulla, Sigiriya, Yala, and Colombo, we highly recommend hiring a private driver for your entire itinerary.
Plan Around the Weather
Sri Lanka experiences two different monsoon seasons, so the best time to visit depends on where you're traveling.
South and West Coast: December through April
East Coast: May through September
No matter when you visit, expect hot and humid conditions year-round. We found it best to schedule hikes, archaeological sites, and other outdoor activities early in the morning before the afternoon heat and occasional rain showers arrived.
Be Ready for Spicy Food
Sri Lankan cuisine quickly became one of our favorite parts of the trip. From flavorful curries to fresh seafood and tropical fruit, every meal was memorable.
That said, don't underestimate the spice level! Even dishes described as "a little spicy" can have quite a kick. If you're sensitive to spicy food, don't hesitate to ask for a milder version when ordering.
Spend More Than One Day in Yala
Many visitors only spend a single day in Yala National Park, usually exploring the famous Block 1 in search of leopards.
While Block 1 absolutely deserves its reputation, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed the quieter Blocks 5 and 6. With fewer safari vehicles, different landscapes, and abundant wildlife, they offered a completely different experience and became some of our favorite game drives of the trip.
If your schedule allows, we highly recommend spending at least two days in Yala to experience multiple areas of the park. It was easily one of the best decisions we made during our Sri Lanka adventure.
Final Thoughts
Sri Lanka exceeded every expectation we had. In just ten days, we explored ancient kingdoms, climbed one of the world's most iconic rock fortresses, searched for elusive leopards on safari, and relaxed beside the Indian Ocean—all while experiencing the warmth and hospitality that make Sri Lanka so special.
If you're looking for a destination that blends history, wildlife, adventure, and luxury into one unforgettable trip, Sri Lanka deserves a place at the top of your travel bucket list. It truly offers something for every kind of traveler, and we can't wait to return.
