Cairns was the first place we explored together in Australia—and we were both immediately taken with the small town. We arrived on a red-eye flight landing early, with the sun just making its debut, expecting a quiet morning—but Cairns was already wide awake. Locals were jogging the esplanade, cafés were open, and the city felt refreshingly fit and lively while still laid-back.

Cairns is this unique balance of relaxed, outdoorsy, friendly, and buzzing with energy. As newly PADI-certified scuba divers, we came for the Great Barrier Reef, but we returned for the walkable waterfront, excellent food, and easygoing coastal vibe.

First Impressions

Travelers can expect a small tropical city that feels active without being hectic, where mornings start early, afternoons slow down, and nearly everything revolves around the ocean. The downtown area is compact and easy to navigate, with a scenic waterfront walkway lined with restaurants, bars, and views of the Coral Sea. It felt social, casual, and welcoming from the moment we arrived.

Top Places To Visit

1. Great Barrier Reef

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef feels like non-negotiable in Cairns. Whether you snorkel, scuba dive, or want to simply observe from the boat, it is an opportunity to visit the world-renowned reef. Expect a 1.5–2 hour boat ride to the outer reef (which can be choppy—Dramamine is your friend). The payoff is crystal-clear water, vibrant coral, and an incredible range of marine life, all topped off with unforgettable sunrise views over the ocean.

Tips: Book with a reputable operator, prepare for motion sickness, and consider multi-day trips for more dive time.

2. Live Aboard

Our live aboard trip with Diver’s Den was an absolute highlight. We booked it almost on a whim, as it was our first liveaboard and early in our travel days, but it exceeded every expectation. Over two days, we completed five dives, enjoyed hearty onboard meals, met travelers from around the world, and had up close and personal encounters with a range of sea life.

Hotel pickup, smooth logistics, and well-run dive operations made this an ideal option for certified divers looking to maximize their time on the reef.

3. Cairns Esplanade & Night Market

The Cairns Esplanade is the heart of the city. With ocean views, green spaces, a public lagoon, and a waterfront walking path, it’s a great place to explore any time of day. In the evening, wander across the street to the Cairns Night Market for souvenirs, local finds, and classic tourist treats. It’s casual, lively, and perfect for a post-dinner stroll.

4. Kuranda Scenic Railway & Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

A day trip to Kuranda is one of the best ways to experience the nearby rainforest. The journey itself is a highlight: traveling through the mountains, passing waterfalls, lush rainforest, and dramatic viewpoints via the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Sky Rainforest Cableway.

Once in Kuranda Village, you’ll find local markets, artisan shops, cafés, animal sanctuaries, and short walking trails—making it an easy, well-paced day trip from Cairns.

Helpful Tip: Book the Scenic Railway/Skyrail combo in advance, allow a full day, and go early to avoid crowds.

Top Places To Eat

1. Muddy's Café

Muddy’s Café was our go-to breakfast stop. Located along the waterfront, it attracts both locals and travelers and has an easy, social atmosphere. The breakfast dishes were excellent, the coffee was solid, and it’s an ideal spot for a relaxed morning meal or quick caffeine fix.

2. Splash Seafood Restaurant

If you’re craving seafood with a view, Splash Seafood Restaurant delivers. The outdoor seating and attentive service made it a standout dinner choice. While everything we tried was delicious, the oysters stole the show—especially the grapefruit and champagne sauce, which was easily the best oyster accompaniment we’ve had anywhere.

3. Miss Chief Bar and Café

Miss Chief Bar and Café surprised us in the best way. This moody, stylish spot offers a largely vegan menu with creative, flavorful dishes. As travelers who enjoy plant-based foods, this was a welcome find. The cocktails were equally impressive and made for a perfect final-night stop.

4. Conservatory Bar

The Conservatory Bar is a laid-back yet stylish spot right in downtown Cairns, making it an ideal place to unwind after a day in the sun. A true gem, this wine bar is home to over eight hundred wines, carefully collected and selected by the owners. The great selection and wine knowledge is matched by a menu of sophisticated cocktails made to perfection. All of this in a cozy, intimate environment designed to encourage conversation and connection. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, conversations linger, and one drink easily turns into two.

Top Places To Stay

1. Oaks Cairns Hotel

Oaks Cairns Hotel is a modern hotel in downtown Cairns that offers comfort, space, and convenience. Located steps from the Cairns Esplanade, marina, and city center, it’s an excellent base for exploring the waterfront, restaurants, and tour departures to the Great Barrier Reef. The hotel features well-designed rooms and a rooftop restaurant.

2. Hilton Cairns

Hilton Cairns was a comfortable, convenient base for exploring the city. The location is walkable to the esplanade, marina, restaurants, and tour pickups. Staff were friendly, the amenities were reliable (gym, pool, restaurant/bar), and the outdoor koi pond added a peaceful touch.

How to Get Around

Cairns is compact and easy to navigate.

  • Walking: Downtown and the esplanade are very walkable.

  • Taxis / Rideshare: The airport is about 10 minutes from the city center, and taxis or Uber are affordable and convenient.

  • Tours: Many reef and rainforest tours include hotel pickup and drop-off.

  • Car Rental: Only necessary if you plan to explore nearby rainforests or venture farther afield.

Helpful Travel Tips for Cairns

  • Best time to visit: May–October offers drier weather and more comfortable temperatures. Summer months (December to February) tend to bring heat, rain, and coincides with jellyfish season.

  • Cash vs card: Cards are widely accepted.

  • Local etiquette: Cairns is casual and outdoorsy—dress comfortably, respect the reef, and embrace early mornings.

Cairns is the kind of place that makes adventure feel easy. It’s perfect for travelers who love the ocean, value walkability, and want unforgettable natural experiences without the stress of a big city. Whether you’re diving the Great Barrier Reef, strolling the esplanade, exploring the jungle, or starting your morning with a seaside coffee, Cairns has a way of making you slow down—and still feel like you’re doing something extraordinary.
