Komodo National Park Cruise

For three days, we lived on a boat sailing through one of the most wild and untouched landscapes in Indonesia.

Fewer crowds. No rushing between islands. Just living on the water for three days.

Our 3-day, 2-night cruise through Komodo National Park aboard the Catneze turned out to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of our travels — not just because of what we saw, but how it felt to experience it.

Here’s exactly what the trip was like, the full itinerary, what it cost, and whether a Komodo cruise is actually worth it.

Where Is Komodo National Park?

Komodo National Park is located in eastern Indonesia, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Most trips depart from Labuan Bajo, a small coastal town on Flores that acts as the gateway to the park.

The area is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site known for:

  • Komodo dragons (the world’s largest lizards)

  • vibrant coral reefs

  • manta rays

  • dramatic island landscapes

Best season: April–November (dry season, calmer seas)

Why Choose a Komodo Cruise Instead of Day Trips?

Komodo’s islands are spread out, and there's a lot you can see. A liveaboard-style cruise allows you to:

  • reach sites early (before crowds arrive)

  • stay later after day boats leave

  • experience sunrise and sunset in remote locations

  • avoid long daily speedboat transfers

  • visit more locations efficiently

Day trips can sometimes feel rushed if you are trying to "fit" it all in. A cruise makes it immersive.

And that difference is everything.

Our Boat: Catneze by Komodo Luxury Cruises

We boarded the Catneze, a luxury-style wooden phinisi departing from Labuan Bajo.

Cabins & Comfort
  • multiple cabin types (standard → premium suites)

  • private bathrooms

  • air conditioning

  • ocean-facing windows

We stayed in Santulum 1, which included:

  • a private balcony

  • spacious layout

  • open-air bathroom

It was one of the most beautiful rooms we’ve had on the water.

Shared Spaces Onboard

The boat has three main levels:

Lower Deck

  • indoor dining area

  • drinks and snacks always available

Main Deck

  • lounge seating with couches

  • shaded relaxation space

Top Deck

  • open-air with bean bags

  • best spot for sunsets and stargazing

The layout felt social without ever feeling crowded.

What a 3-Day Komodo Cruise Itinerary Looks Like

The experience had an action-packed itinerary each day, but still felt balanced with downtime.

Day 1: Reefs, Mantas & Pink Sand
  • hotel pickup → short transfer to port

  • speedboat transfer to main vessel

  • breakfast onboard

Stops include:

  • coral reef snorkeling (turtles + reef fish)

  • manta point (highlight)

  • pink sand beach

The manta experience was surreal — we had a dozen swimming around us, completely unbothered.

It was notably crowded. But, honestly, the crowds kind of fade away in an experience like that. Absolutely worth it.

We ended the night with dinner onboard and getting to know the group.

Day 2: Sunrise Hike & Komodo Dragons
  • 4:45 am wake-up

  • sunrise hike at Padar Island

  • Komodo Island (guided walk)

  • snorkeling stop

Padar Island is one of the most iconic views in Indonesia — layered ridge lines and curved beaches in every direction.

It does get crowded. Getting slightly off-path makes a huge difference.

Seeing Komodo dragons in the wild was a true bucket list moment. They’re bigger — and faster — than expected.

Evening highlight: At sunset, thousands of bats fly overhead from the mangroves.

No exaggeration — this was such an unexpectedly surreal travel moment.

Day 3: Baby Sharks & Final Swim
  • morning island stop

  • return to Labuan Bajo by lunchtime

The water here was filled with baby sharks — and yes, you swim with them.

It sounds intimidating. It wasn’t.

It ended up being one of the most unexpectedly fun moments of the trip.

Food on Catneze

This deserves its own section.

The food was:

  • abundant

  • varied

  • surprisingly high quality

Each meal included:

  • multiple dishes (meat + vegetarian options)

  • fresh fruit

Meals also became a social anchor — by the end, the group genuinely bonded over the shared experience.

Top Experiences in Komodo National Park

1. Swimming with Manta Rays

One of the most unique wildlife encounters in the world.

2. Seeing Komodo Dragons

Rare, prehistoric, and unforgettable.

3. Padar Island Sunrise

Arguably one of the best viewpoints in Southeast Asia.

4. Bat Migration at Sunset

Completely unexpected — and unforgettable.

5. Pink Sand Beaches

A natural phenomenon you don’t see often.

The Biggest Surprise About This Trip

We expected incredible scenery.

We didn’t expect how emotionally impactful it would feel.

There’s something about being out there — limited signal, open water, dramatic landscapes — that forces you to slow down and just experience it.

It felt like a reset.

Komodo Cruise Cost (3 Days / 2 Nights)

Total cost, per person, for the santulum room was $605 per person.

Most cruises typically include:

  • accommodation

  • all meals

  • snorkeling gear

  • guided excursions

  • transfers

Often NOT included:

  • Komodo National Park fees ($45 per person)

  • tips

  • alcohol

An absolute surprise bonus was the guides and crew took photographs and video footage throughout the trip, including underwater and drone footage. At no cost. This was such a thoughtful gesture that added to the magic of this trip for us.

Komodo Cruise Tips

Book the Right Boat

There’s a wide range — from budget to luxury. Photos can be misleading, so reviews matter. Be sure to use a reputable site.

Expect Some Crowds at Key Stops

Padar and manta points are popular — go early or adjust expectations.

Pack Smart

Bring:

  • dry bag

  • reef-safe sunscreen

  • swimsuits

  • light layers

  • flip flops/sandals

  • motion sickness tablets (we were ok, but always a good idea to be prepared)

Is a Komodo National Park Cruise Worth It?

Yes — absolutely.

Between the wildlife, landscapes, and overall experience, this is one of the most unique trips you can take in Indonesia.

A day trip will show you Komodo.

A cruise lets you actually experience it.

If it’s on your list — do it right.
