Khao Sok National Park — Thailand’s Jungle Adventure Playground
If you’re looking for one of Thailand’s most dramatic landscapes, Khao Sok National Park delivers. Towering limestone cliffs rise from emerald lakes, dense rainforest stretch for miles, winding rivers cut through the jungle, and quiet temples sit tucked into the hills.

Located between Phuket, Krabi, and Surat Thani, Khao Sok is one of the easiest national parks to add to a southern Thailand itinerary — and one of the most rewarding if you enjoy nature, adventure, and unique landscapes.
There are plenty of ways to spend your time exploring Khao Sok National Park.
For us, we enjoyed mixing adrenaline and calm: a 2-hour ATV jungle ride, a Cheow Lan Lake boat tour, a river raft experience, and a temple visit to Thamma Park. You can catch a glimpse of our adventures here.
Here’s how to you can plan your own Khao Sok adventure.
Best Things to Do in Khao Sok National Park
1. Take a Boat Ride on Cheow Lan Lake (A Must-Do Experience)
Cheow Lan Lake is the crown jewel of Khao Sok National Park. With limestone karst formations rising straight from the water and floating raft houses scattered across the lake, the scenery feels surreal.
A longtail boat ride on Cheow Lan Lake is one of the most popular Khao Sok activities — and for good reason.
What to Expect on a Cheow Lan Lake Boat Tour
Most tours include:
Longtail boat cruising through dramatic karst formations
Stops at floating raft houses
Swimming opportunities
Short jungle walks, cave stops, or animal watching (depending on tour)
Scenic photo viewpoints
Calm, glassy water in the morning hours
While many travelers book tours online in advance, we opted to book locally through our accommodation. This gave us more flexibility and was slightly more affordable than the online alternatives.
We chose a private longtail boat tour, which included transportation, lasted approximately three hours, and included stops at a cave and floating houses where we could take a break, grab food, or rent a kayak.
Having a private boat also meant we could spend more time in places we enjoyed most and move more quickly through others.
Other tours commonly include options to do animal watching, lunch, or jungle walks.
Tip: Go early in the day if possible — the water is smoother, the light is better for photos, and there are significantly fewer crowds.
2. Go on a 2-Hour Khao Sok ATV Jungle Ride
If you want to balance out the peaceful lake views with something more adventurous, a Khao Sok ATV tour is a great choice.
Our two-hour ATV ride took us through jungle tracks, local roads, and scenic viewpoints.
Along the way we passed caves, temples, and beautiful views of Cheow Lan Lake. We stopped several times for photos and short breaks.
It was a fun way to explore areas that would be difficult to reach on foot while also getting a glimpse of local life outside of the main tourist areas.

Khao Sok ATV Tips
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Closed-toe shoes are essential
Bring sunglasses/eye protection
Wear sunscreen
Expect mud during the rainy season
Morning rides are cooler and more comfortable
Most tours are beginner-friendly and include a brief practice session before heading out.
3. Try a Khao Sok River Raft Experience
For something slower and more peaceful, a river float in Khao Sok is one of the most relaxing ways to experience the jungle.
Depending on water levels and operator style, this may be:
bamboo raft floating
guided tube drifting
small raft boat floating
You’ll gently drift downstream while guides steer past limestone cliffs and alongside jungles, highlighting local wildlife.
Many of these tours offer the opportunities to jump in for a swim or sit in a tube behind the float. It’s refreshing, scenic, and a great contrast to higher-energy activities.
River Float Tips
Bring waterproof phone protection
Wear secure sandals or water shoes
Don’t expect to stay completely dry
Wear a swimsuit if you want to swim
Best conditions often occur after a light rain when water levels are higher
4. Visit Thamma Park Temple
For a cultural and reflective break, visiting Thamma Park Temple adds a meaningful dimension to your Khao Sok itinerary.
Set in a quiet natural area, this temple complex offers:
serene forest surroundings
statues and meditation areas
peaceful walking paths
far fewer crowds than major temples
It’s not a rushed tourist stop — it’s a place to slow down and appreciate the environment.
Keep in mind that reaching the pagodas requires climbing stairs and crossing elevated walkways, so a moderate level of fitness helps.
Temple Visit Tips:
Cover shoulders and knees
Remove shoes where required
Wear comfortable walking shoes
Bring water
Visit in morning or late afternoon for cooler weather
How Many Days Do You Need in Khao Sok?
For most travelers, 2–3 days in Khao Sok is ideal.
This gives you enough time to explore the lake, experience a few activities, and enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.
Sample 3-Day Khao Sok Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival + temple visit + village dinner
Day 2: Cheow Lan Lake boat tour (full day)
Day 3: ATV jungle ride + jungle float
This balance offers adventure, scenery, and culture while still leaving room to relax.
Best Time to Visit Khao Sok
Khao Sok is open year-round, but conditions vary.
Best months: December–April
During this period you’ll generally experience:
less rain
easier lake access
better trail conditions
The rainy season (May–November) can still be beautiful, but expect more frequent showers and muddier trails.
Where to Stay in Khao Sok
Many visitors stay either:
Khao Sok Village — best for restaurants, tour access, and village atmosphere
Cheow Lan Lake raft houses — best for unique overnight lake experience
During our visit, we chose to stay near Cheow Lan Lake for convenience and comfort.
We stayed at Belong Jin, which offered spacious rooms, great views, and a relaxing pool. It was only about a ten-minute drive to the lake and had a few nearby restaurants.
A few things we considered when choosing accommodation:
Lake raft houses often book up far in advance
Some travelers report they can be noisy at night
Khao Sok Village is about a 45-minute drive from the lake
For our travel style, staying near the lake offered the best mix of comfort and accessibility.
