A few months into long-term travel, total freedom began to feel unfamiliar. Without routine or expectations, we were forced to question who we are without structure. This reflection explores the tension between freedom and uncertainty, the loss of identity tied to productivity, and the shift toward choosing what truly matters—connection, curiosity, and how we spend our time when nothing is required of us.
What started as a simple comment slowly became a yearlong journey. After years of living abroad in Japan, we chose to take a year off to travel—seeking perspective, connection, and a slower way of living.
